Dan Humiston: [00:00:00] Hey everyone. Thanks for joining us. And welcome back. We have another great show in store for you today. Maggie Kelly and Ross O'Brien are here to talk about their new podcast cannabis Capitol. Ross' Maggie. Welcome to the show.
Maggie Kelly: Hi, Dan.
Ross O'Brien: Hey, Dan.
Maggie Kelly: Great to be here.
Dan Humiston: This is exciting. The first episode of cannabis capital airs on Thursday, and there's already a lot of buzz. And so I'm glad you were able to stop by, to give us a preview to get started. I wanted to talk about, about the Genesis of this show. As many of our listeners two pod connects know that the MJ bulls podcast is produced by podcasts.
It's really just a quick tangent. Show about cannabis companies that are raising capital and it's a really popular show, but a lot of listeners wanted more. They've been asking for a longer, a deeper dive format. And I didn't feel like I had the expertise to host that type of a show, but I knew who did. [00:01:00] Just give me an idea of why, you wanted to jump in and do this podcast. Why does it make sense to do longer cannabis podcast show?
Ross O'Brien: Yeah. Thanks a lot, Dan. And let's be clear, you asked Maggie first to do that. So I was your second choice, right? So,
Dan Humiston: Yeah.
Ross O'Brien: but you know, Maggie and I work together or Bonaventure equity, we have a venture capital fund. We have a very sometimes contrarian, but very specific investment thesis related to cannabis.
And as Dan you've had me on other shows. I was talking about my book cannabis cap. And we felt it was time to really shine a light on some of the conversations that we're having. And we wanted to bring people into the boardrooms, into the zoom meetings and behind the curtain, because we think we're having some just really important conversations and discussions around cannabis.
So we really want to cut through. A lot of the noise is and what we call sort of the remnants of the green rush. We're here in this for the longterm. And it takes going into a deeper dive to really put those strategies in place for the longterm.
Maggie Kelly: I would say from my [00:02:00] perspective, why this podcast makes sense as the next thing that our team is doing is that from where I said cannabis venture capital, that is Ross's domain associated with Bonaventure equity. Ross. And I have a background in higher education. So entrepreneur education is also his domain.
It's a domain that we shared and that's how we actually met over a decade ago. So I've seen Ross in the classroom, teaching aspiring entrepreneurs, the basics of writing a business plan, what it means to actually get your financials together. What it means to actually put together realistic projections, what it actually means.
To go out and seek investment. And what that process actually looks like, because what you see on TV, all of the great, exciting shows that have all kinds of pitches and celebrity judges, those are entertaining, but those are not necessarily reflective of what investment actually looks like. And what venture capital [00:03:00] investment actually looks like.
And this podcast makes sense for, from my perspective, because this is an educational platform. As well as just being informative and interviewing notable names, hopefully our listeners take away something and they've learned something that they didn't know about cannabis venture capital, and Ross is the perfect person to deliver on that message.
Ross O'Brien: Well, I'm going to take away something. Didn't know is that you were that impressed with me, Maggie. Thank you. I guess I did something right while we were teaching the classes together. But I think I had to tie a bow on that. I think it's a natural extension of why I started writing the book and Dan, you and I have talked about that a lot.
It was to provide a resource to entrepreneurs so they can be more successful in raising capital. And this is targeted to entrepreneurs that are really in the. Early stage formation stage startup stage series, a series B high growth companies, high risk, the domain of venture capital. [00:04:00] And this is a natural extension of that because we have a mission at our first to create a billion dollars in value and positively impact a billion lives.
And to do that, we do it through three things. We invest, we engage with. And engagement is, is being able to highlight what we think are meaningful or at least dynamic conversations that can be accessible to people and help them in their daily pursuits of what they're trying to accomplish. We're here in service of the entrepreneurs more than anything, which means that we're not just passive investors.
And this was a great opportunity , to partner with you Dan, and really reach some of the people I think that are going to find this really
Dan Humiston: Ross, maybe just tell us a little bit about the format or some of the weekly features that you intend to have in the show.
Ross O'Brien: Yeah. well, we're really excited. So Maggie and I are co-hosting the show. And we have, as in the book, the cannabis economy is one of the concepts that I formed , and put out there because I don't believe that cannabis is an industry. And I think we're doing ourselves a disservice to talk about it as an industry.
So we think about cannabis as a [00:05:00] macro global economy with sub sectors and industries within it. Now that's a bit of a contrarian perspective , and people like to challenge that, which is great. So we have Actually an open challenge which is, we believe that cannabis has reached the boardroom of every company, of every industry period.
And if anybody thinks that it hasn't yet, we'd love to have that conversation. So we've already have plenty of really good feedback , and conversations through the website where people can submit to have this discussion with us. So we're going to start the show with really talking about. The verticals in the cannabis economy and peeling back the onion to really understand what cannabis legalization means to all these different incumbent sectors.
Because for us, we're also looking at the future of cannabis as being the future of business. So we don't want to just throw out everything that historically has been successful in industry and expect that something different will happen just because we have cannabis accessible. So Maggie is going to surprise me with something.
Have me see if we can respond off the cuff to make sure that, we're holding true and being [00:06:00] challenged to our thesis. And so far we're batting a thousand, but we'll see everybody has an average and we have access and maybe you'd like to talk about some of the people , that we have access to, to really then take that conversation a step further because we're very fortunate to have access to people that not all of our listeners will be able to hear from directly.
And this is a great way for them. To benefit from that. Well, did I leave anything out, Maggie?
Maggie Kelly: rash, you did. We need to share the actual website address. So listeners, if you can please visit cannabis capital podcast.com and click on the cannabis economy. Challenge challenges. Tell us of an industry that cannabis has not impacted and your submission just might make it on a future episode.
Dan Humiston: Maggie what type of gastros are you looking for?
Maggie Kelly: So the guests that we have lined up so far, we have some innovative founders that are company names that you've probably heard of, but the actual leaders behind those companies you haven't [00:07:00] necessarily spoken to yet. So we have some interviews lined up with innovative founders. We have some influential decision makers and key persons involved in the regulatory aspects of cannabis legalization.
And we also have some notable professional athletes who have made a substantial name for themselves and their particular area of expertise. However, they're on to second careers and making strides in the cannabis economy and they're doing wonderful things. And we can't wait to share the interviews with you.
Dan Humiston: Wow. You've wet my whistle. Let's play a clip from the show and just give people a feel for what it's going to sound like. Yeah.
Maggie Kelly: Okay.[00:08:00]
Dan Humiston: Ooh, that's great.
Maggie Kelly: Classic.
Ross O'Brien: That worked out
so
well.
Dan Humiston: , I think the fact that you keep, a very serious topic, you're able to keep it light. I think that makes a big difference and I find it more way more interesting if it's entertaining.
Maggie Kelly: Well, I hope that's what our listeners find as well. These are some heavy topics. These are some complicated subjects that we'll tackle subjects, that people go to school for 4, 6, 8 plus years to really learn and comprehend and become experts on. And we're trying to communicate really big ideas in a relatively short amount of time.
So we have to keep it a little light. There's some dry topics, but with Ross's sense of humor, And my keeping us on track we'll have a good from.
Dan Humiston: Yeah. Yeah. Your expertise obviously , is the foundation for the show, but I really feel like the secret [00:09:00] sauce will be the confidence that you have with each other , you know how far to push it and still keep it fun. Ross, what do you think.
Ross O'Brien: If I can be blunt, Dan, we're going to have a lot of puns.
Maggie Kelly: Wow.
Dan Humiston: Okay. We're all looking forward to cannabis. Capital's premiere on Thursday and all the new episodes that'll be coming out every week on all major podcasts sites, including pod connects, where you can also apply to be a guest Ross and Maggie looking forward to it.
Thanks for being on the show today.
Ross O'Brien: Thanks Dan.
